Mentone is a bayside suburb , divided by Nepean Highway in Melbourne’s south east .
Mentone has beach frontage on one side of the suburb . It is known locally for its beautiful beach which extends from the cliffs in Beaumaris and ends at Warrigal Road where it meets Parkdale. The other side of Mentone across the highway is not beachside. It is 21km from the CBD with a population of ll,ooo people .
It was originally founded as a resort town and named after the Italian seaside resort of Menton and some street names have Italian names such as Venice, Milan and Florence .

Mentone is a middle income suburb with well developed infrastrucutre and some exclusive areas .
It has a shopping strip of the streets Como Parade West and Balcombe Road including surrounding streets and laneways.

Another retail area has grown along Nepean Highway which is expanding with development along Warrigal Highway .
Politically the majority of Mentone voters support the Liberal party however Mentone is currently represented by Labor members in both state and federal parliament due to the Labor voting tendencies of other suburbs in its electoral district of Isaacs.

Mentone is located on Nepean Highway. and is serviced by Metlink buses and Connex trainline all running out of the Mentone Railway Station.
It has a pub night club and sporting clubs such as football golf lifeasaving bowling and basketball
Many schools such as Kilbreda College, catholic girls school and St Bedes catholic boys are Mentone based. There are two Grammar Schools , one being for girls , another girls school Mentone Girls Secondary College and St Patricks and Mentone Primary Schools.
